Abstract

Bulk Fe-50Ni alloys with a short-range ordered L10 phase were prepared by cubic pressing and subsequent heat treatment. Sintered Fe–50Ni alloys were cubic pressed at 310 °C and 5 GPa for 1 h and then tempered at 310 °C for 90 d. Vibrating sample magnetometer tests proved the formation of a hard magnetic phase in the alloys, which significantly affected the magnetic properties of the matrix comprising the soft magnetic A1 phase. X-ray diffraction and field emission transmission electron microscopy confirmed the existence of the ordered L10 phase. During the cubic pressing process, the distance of atomic diffusion was shortened and the number of defects in the alloy significantly increased, which promoted the nucleation and growth of the ordered phase. A long-duration tempering process further increased the size of the ordered domain.
