Abstract
To reveal the features of natural convection flow of water during its solidification in rectangular cavity, the velocity field was measured with PIV technique and the temperature field was measured with thermal-couples. The cavity was cooled at the bottom as well as the two vertical sides. The horizontal gradient of the water temperature is the main cause to drive the water flow and its development. A new vortex in the water flow field emerges and grows up during the cooling process, and eventually the flow pattern inversed. Super-cooling solidification happened because the critical nucleus of ice is of large dimension. The intensity of natural convection can be reinforced with decreasing the temperature of the cooler, so does the velocity of solidification.
