Enhanced Flux Modulation of FSCW Consequent Pole PM Machine Employing Stator Slot Halbach PM

Abstract

Fractional slot concentrated winding (FSCW) permanent magnet (PM) machines have been promising candidates for industrial applications and domestic appliances due to their outstanding performance. Based on the magnetic field modulation principle, this paper presents an idea for performance improvement of FSCW consequent pole PM machine (FSCW-CPM) by adding PM in the stator slot opening. In this paper, taking one typical slot/pole pair combination of 12/7 as example, the principle of enhanced flux modulation is illustrated firstly. It reveals that multi-harmonics can contribute to torque generation. After that, the electromagnetic performance, including flux-linkage, back EMF, and torque, etc. are analyzed by finite element analysis (FEA). The results validate that the proposal can improve the performance of FSCW machine effectively due to the enhanced flux modulation principle.
