Abstract

This paper focuses on the AC submarine cable failure characteristics caused by the electro-thermal effects from the transient overvoltage. Firstly, the AC system model of an offshore oil platform is established using PSCAD to simulate the characteristics of single-phase grounding fault under two neutral grounding modes: ungrounding and small resistance grounding. The results show that the non-fault phase voltage increases from 25.6kV to 49.7 kV in the neutral point ungrounded system. The fault phase current increases from 112A to 754A in neutral grounding system with small resistance. Secondly, an electric-thermal coupling field model of submarine cable is established. The influence of overvoltage and large current on the electric field and temperature field of submarine cable insulation after single-phase grounding fault is discussed. The electric field in the insulation under fault status is twice higher than that in the normal case. The large transient current enhances the thermal stresses of insulation, leading to the increase of temperature in the fault phase insulation. It can be increased 10℃ in 2.7 h. This paper provides the basic support for the study of the electro-thermal performance of insulation after single phase grounding fault, which is useful to the cable failure researches.
