Abstract

Surface charge accumulation on insulators is an important factor to incur surface flashover. The present study investigates the effects of surface nonlinear conductive coatings on surface charge behavior of alumina-filled epoxy resin spacers. Five SiC/epoxy coatings with different SiC content were prepared and coated on spacer surface. The surface charge distribution in atmospheric pressure air under DC voltage was measured. The results show that with the increase of SiC content, surface charges increase firstly then decrease on SiC/epoxy coated surface compared with uncoated spacer. With the increase of SiC contents, surface charge accumulation can be divided into three regions: the aggravation region at low SiC content, the balance region at moderate SiC content and the suppression region at high SiC content. The game process between the increased trap density and the increased non-linear conductivity caused by the surface coatings is considered to be the main reason for the formation of these three regions.
