Abstract
The effects of side-blown operating parameters on the behavior of laser induced plasma and the weld seam geometry have been studied with the aid of high-speed CCD imaging in CO2 laser welding process of thin stainless steel plate. It is found that the height of the side nozzle and current rate of gas flow can strongly influence the weld seam characteristics, the biggest weld bead width on the back of weld has been achieved when the joint angle of coaxial gas flow and side gas flow is about 40 degrees; and there are two typical cross section during the laser welding process of thin stainless steel plate. One is the trapezoid shape cross section upon complete penetration and the other is the nail shape cross section upon incomplete penetration.
