Abstract
A large number of models for crack closure have been proposed but there is no satisfactory description for fatigue crack propagation (FCP). A new definition based on loss of singularity of stress at the crack tip, is proposed for closure load. An effective semi-analytical model for crack closure is established. FCP data of aluminum alloys is successfully described with this model.
