Abstract

In this paper, we have investigated the light extraction of scintillator using by the photonic crystal consisting of an array of monolayer polystyrene nanospheres and a conformal layer. The effect of the conformal layer on the extraction efficiency was systematically analyzed. It is found that the conformal layer will strongly affect the optical properties of the photonic crystal. The coupling efficiency can be controlled by increasing mode number through varying the thickness and refractive index of the conformal layer. When the mode number increases, the multi-extraction process plays an important role in the ultimate extraction efficiency. Thus, at this situation, the extraction efficiency is more favorable for a thin scintillator. This conclusion is also applicable to other solid-state light-emitting devices.
