Abstract

An improved multi-stage flash desalination (MSF-E) system for seawater is being presented which combines the advantages of multi-stage flash (MSF) systems with that of low temperature multiple effect desalination (LT-MED) systems. Economical indexes such as the water generation ratio of MSF-E system and the annually averaged cost have been studied theoretically. Study results show that compared with existing MSF systems, the water production ratio of MSF-E system can be increased by 42.6% while the annually averaged cost of fresh water can be reduced by 41.3% if the flash steam extraction share is increased from 0 to its theoretically maximal value of 0.743, which shows the MSF-E system to be practicable with bright application prospects.
