Abstract
The dynamic confinement of irradiated samples to suppress the hydrodynamic motion during heating by long beam pulses was investigated. The dynamic confinement provides homogeneous target heating by a low-Z tamper, allowing application of powerful x-ray diagnostics. The heating of a hydrogen sample with the SIS-18 beam at GSI Damstadt was also investigated. It was found that in the optimized heating regime, density variations can be reduced to a level of 15% from the initial density value.
