Abstract

China development strategy in power industry calls for more applications of power electronics equipment, while it is required to test the power electronics equipments before they are put into application for the power grid safe operation. High voltage valve is core of the power electronics equipment, which takes the role of switching or converting, and is also the most vulnerable component, so it is the focal point of the test. The dielectric test of power electronics high voltage valve (static var compensator valve (SVC), thyristor controlled series compensator valve (TCSC), static synchronous compensator valve (STATCOM), and high voltage direct current valve (HVDC)) is elaborated The requirements of IEC standard on SVC and HVDC valve are outlined, the calculation formula for the test voltage is given in brief; the test waveform information and the test procedure are provided. According to the test standard, the test equipments and facilities are introduced, which have been put into use in the High Power Electronics Laboratory (HPEL) of China EPRI (Electric Power Research Institute). Especially the specialty of the partial discharge (PD) test on high power electronics valve is analyzed and the test method and facility of partial discharge test are given. The application of the test of thyristor valve for static var compensation (SVC) in thyristor-controlled reactor (TCR) project of Laiyang Steel Factory (Shandong province) is reviewed, including a brief introduction of the high voltage valve for the project, the test programs and measuring data, and the actual measurement test waveform for partial discharge test in either DC and AC conditions. The methods and equipment are used successively in other SVC projects, including industry customs and utility customs. The practicability and availability of the test method and equipments for the high power electronics valve are verified by these engineering applications.
