Design of magnet arrays for a permanent magnetic linear motor

Abstract

An ironless single side permanent magnetic linear motor structure is presented, and two-dimensional analytical formulae for its magnetic field are deduced to design the types of magnet arrays, thickness of permanent magnet, duty ratio of magnet arrays, etc. With the certain design parameters, a conventional array comes into use instead of a piecewise Halbach arrays, and the machining and assemblage of the motor are greatly simplified. The calculation results are in accordance with that of ANSYS. The analytical formulae can be used in design of a cored linear motor by modifying boundary conditions. A linear motor driven bench with single degree of freedom is realized, where the travel reaches to 27 mm, mass of the moving parts 1.4 kg, and maximum acceleration 11.5 m/s2.
