Abstract

Pro-BDNF is the precursor of mature brain -derived neurotrophic factor (mBDNF). Many recent studies have shown that pro -BDNF exists not only as a precursor of mBDNF, but also is secreted directly into the extracellular matrix by neurons and plays additional biological roles different from mBDNF. Here, we reviewed the current advances in studies on pro -BDNF molecular structure, distribution in the central nervous system, receptors, secretion and regulation. Special attention was focus on pro -BDNF in association with long-term depression, synaptic plasticity, memory formation and drug addiction.
