Abstract
In this paper a genetic algorithm is used to compute the optimal velocity distribution of a turbo-machinery 2-D diffuser. Using this new approach, the expected optimal surface velocity distribution of 2-D diffuser can be very accurately searched, which on one hand, can make the velocity value minimized at the diffuser's outlet, and, in the same, guarantee the continuation of flow in the boundary layer. The approach is demonstrated with a 2-D diffuser which has the same flow conditions with that in the famous Stratford's experiment. The obtained result shows a good consistency with Stratford's experiment.
