Abstract

Corrugated channel core sandwich panels (3CSPs) have great potential as a bi-functional (simultaneous loadbearing and heat dissipation) lightweight structure used in the integral thermal protection system (ITPS) of a highspeed space vehicle. The failure mechanisms of 3CSPs under out-of-plane compression were investigated using a combined experimental, analytical and numerical approach. A variety of deformation modes were captured via experimental measurements and finite element (FE) simulations. The analytical results revealed three possible failure modes of 3CSPs: core web Euler buckling (EB), core web local buckling (LB), and core web material yielding (MY). The theory of structural stability was employed to define relevant failure criteria and then construct the failure mode maps of 3CSPs.
