Abstract

Yan et al. demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that defects are essential for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal-free carbon materials. Heteroatoms exhibit very limited ORR activity without valid defects such as pentagons, but they are potent in promoting the ORR of defective carbons.
