Abstract

Literature data so far indicate that TiB2 particles are pushed by growing dendrites during alloy solidification, which is inconsistent with theoretical predictions. We utilized isothermal coarsening at a fraction solid of 0.5 to study engulfment of TiB2 particles by globular aluminum grains in Al-4.5 wt pct Cu-2 wt pct TiB2 alloy in order to minimize fluid flow in the liquid. We found that TiB2 particles were indeed engulfed by growing globular aluminum grains.
