Abstract

Many systems with two phases or multiphase could be investigated by direct simulation method, dispersed particle simulation and two fluid methods. Direct simulation method or dispersed particle simulation needed to study the character and physical process of the dispersed phase, and in order to improve the accuracy of two-fluid method, much attention should be paid to distribution and microcosmic behaviors of the dispersed phase to identify the interaction between phases. Population balance model connecting the microcosmic behaviors with the macroscopic token of dispersed phase became an essential tool for dispersed system. In this paper, the physical meaning, form and application of population balance model were analyzed in detail in view of operational character in different multiphase systems. Computation cost, realization difficulty and solution accuracy of different numerical methods were compared and the potential applications of the Models were prospected.
