Abstract
Adjacent structures may collide with each other under severe earthquake excitation unless special strategies are adopted to avoid such hazards. Magnetorheological dampers(MRD) are installed parallelly between the adjacent structures, and may restrain elastic-plastic vibration of the adjacent structures subjected to seismic motions. The mechanical model and structural parameters of MRD are presented. Meanwhile, the vibration equations of two adjacent structures connected by dampers are derived, and a semi-active controller is designed based on optimal control theory. Numerical simulation given here has demonstrated the effectiveness of MRD on vibration control of the adjacent structures, thus the danger of collision between adjacent structures is eliminated.
