Abstract

This paper presents an innovative modular multilevel converter topology suitable for very high voltage applications, especially network interties in power generation and transmission, e.g., High Voltage Direct Current Transmission System based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC-HVDC). And the paper is the part of prophase research for the implementation of the first VSC-HVDC project in China in 2009. The reason why the modular multilevel topology considered is explained. The working mechanism of it is described in detail. Then, the submodule (i.e., the basic building block) and the concept of controlled submodule capacitor voltages balancing are discussed. And the capacitance installed in each submodule is calculated in detail. In allusion to this new VSC topology, a modified multilevel fundamental switching modulation control scheme using power sums theory is presented. For demonstrating the good performance of the modular multilevel VSC topology, a three-phase pulse-controlled inverter is simulated. For this purpose the simulation software PSCAD/EMTDC linked to MATLAB/SIMULINK is used. And percharge of individual submoudle capacitors is described. The theory analysis and simulation results indicate that the new advanced VSC is superior to the existing two-level and three-level VSCs. And it has great potentiality in the application of VSC-HVDC projects in future.
