All-Metal Wide-Angle Scanning Magnetoelectric Dipole Phased Array

Abstract

In this paper, an all-metal 8× 8 magnetoelectric (ME) dipole phased array (PA) with 2D wide-angle scanning capability is proposed. A compact ME dipole antenna with wide beamwidth is designed as the antenna element, where the wedge-shaped dipole works as the electric dipole, and the gap between the supporting walls works as the magnetic dipole. Moreover, an 8× 8 array is further developed. Metal blocks are added on both sides of the embedded antenna element to optimize its radiation performance. The simulated results show that the proposed array antenna has operating band of 16-18 GHz. The array has beam scanning range of pm 55 in two dimensions and the gain fluctuation is no more than 3 dBi. The active S11of the array center element keeps below -6 dB during beam scanning. The proposed array has the advantages of low loss, large power capacity and wide-angle scanning capability.
