Abstract

The aim of this paper is to research the aggregation state and mechanical properties of insulation material from 110kV and 220kV XLPE cables out of service in Beijing. The slices cut from the cable were researched through the differential scanning calorimeter analysis (DSC) and mechanical property analysis. The DSC analysis results show that the left limit temperature of melting peak for cables operated for more than 10 years are extended about 10°C to the lower temperature direction, which means that the crystallinity, crystal size and crystal size distribution are changed; the crystallization rate of sample operated increased with operation year, which means that some bonds of the crosslink points are broken. The results of mechanical property analysis show that the elastic modulus, fracture energy of cables operated for more than 10 years are decreased, which means there exist partly physical ageing of these samples in consideration of the DSC analysis.
