Abstract
Due to the weld distortion generated during block assembly in shipbuilding, the shape of the thin plate panel structures becomes very rugged, if no measures are applied to straighten it. Therefore an additional correction process by flame torch is widely used to obtain the desired final flat structure. In this study, a geometrical approach was developed for determining the heating process parameters. In this approach, a method to concentrate the heating lines on the large-curvature region is firstly introduced. Then the required angles and heating lines are determined accordingly by geometrical approach. Secondly, the relation between geometrical data and heating process parameters is investigated by experiments and finite element analysis in order to achieve the optimal correction process. Finally, correction of simple single-curved distorted shape assumed to be distorted by welding is verified by numerical simulation. This geometrical approach can be used for further research on straightening the rugged complex shape regardless of the prediction procedure of the welding distortion.
