A strain measurement and crack detection method based on microstrip patch antennas

Abstract

A strain measurement and crack detection method based on the microstrip patch antenna sensor is introduced, in which the resonant frequency shift can be utilized to measure strain and detect the crack length and orientation. An antenna sensor with a rectangular antenna patch radiates at two fundamental modes and the resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the electrical lengths of the corresponding antenna radiation modes. An applied strain changes the dimension of the microstrip patch antenna, resulting in the change of the electrical length, and cracks with different length and orientation have different influences on the electrical length as well. Therefore, the applied strain and quantitative crack information can be presented by the changes of antenna resonant frequencies. Four kinds of microstrip patch antenna sensors with different dimensions were designed and manufactured to measure the strain, and the results show that there is a strong linear relationship between the resonant frequency shift and the strain. Besides, the sensors are more sensitive at higher initial resonant frequencies, which is in good agreement with the theoretical analysis. Finally, the feasibility of crack detection based on microstrip patch antenna sensors was verified by experiments. The research can provide a preliminary theoretical basis for the microstrip patch antenna sensor in the wireless structural health monitoring.
