Abstract

DC distribution network is becoming the trend of development in the future because of convenience for renewable energy accessing and better power quality compared with traditional ac distribution network. Protection is crucial for dc distribution network to operate safely but it is still at the beginning of research. A protection method applied to dc distribution network is proposed in this paper based on ratio of high and low frequency current amplitude. Firstly, topology of dc distribution network and protection object is introduced. Then fault characteristics under internal fault and external fault are analyzed in theory. Because of the hindrance properties of boundary units to high frequency components, the ratio of high and low frequency current amplitude under internal fault is much higher than which under external fault. The difference is more obvious with the gap of high and low frequency increasing. Protection criterion is proposed based on this difference. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC software verify the effectiveness of this protection method.
