Abstract

This paper presents a new hybrid voltage source converter topology for HVDC applications. It consists of strings of diodes in the upper converter arms and cascaded switched-diode cells in the lower converter arms. Compared to the conventional Alternate Arm Modular Multilevel Converter (AA-MMC) families, which this converter belongs to, it reduces the number of active switches by half since the upper converter arms use naturally commutated devices (diodes). Therefore, it provides 50 percent reduction in the number of gate drivers and associate control circuits. In addition, it reduces the semiconductor device power loss significantly compared to other similar alternate arm converter topologies due to the reduction in the number of active switches and its unique circuit operation. The basic operating principle of the proposed converter and its associated control strategy that regulates the power exchange between the converter, and the ac and dc networks are discussed in detail. The operation of the proposed converter is verified using PLECS and simulation results validating its operations are presented.
