Abstract

DC power transmission has become more and more important in power grid construction, and the HVDC cable is one of the most important power devices. However, due to long-time monopoly by foreign firms, China has no enough ability in mass production of stable and reliable HVDC cable insulating materials and shielding materials at present, thus it is urgently needed to develop new cable materials with independent intellectual property rights in our country. From the aspect of technical requirements, we review the research path and future development, research progress and path analysis of HVDC cable materials. Firstly, we discuss the technical requirements including dielectric strength, electric field distribution, and space charge transport. Then, we analyze the present situation, advantages and disadvantages, trap characteristics, and the development direction of cable materials including high purity cable materials, nanocomposite cable materials, blended composite cable materials, grafting cable materials, and shielding materials. Finally, we forecast the future development. The co-relationship between DC insulation characteristics is established using the charge trap theory. The effect of charge trap behavior on DC insulation characteristics is obtained. The trap characteristics and adjusting methods for various paths are summarized. This research can provide a theoretical support for the development of new DC cable materials.
