Abstract

An optimization method for meshing paramters of harmonic drives that considers mechanical characteristics is proposed to solve the fatigue failure problem of thin walled flexspline of harmonic drive. The method starts from the characteristics of the stress and deformation of the unique thin-walled parts of harmonic drives and takes both the radial deformation quantity of wave generator and the meshing interval that have greater impact on the flexspline stress as optimization targets, while the parameters of the wave generator profile, the tooth profile parameters of the flexsplilne and circular spline are taken as design variables. Then an unconstrained multi-objective optimization mathematical model for harmonic drive meshing parameters is built by combining a genetic algorithm and a penalty function method. Optimal weight coefficients are determined by balancing the meshing interval and the mechanical characteristics. A mechanical characteristics analysis method is used to analyse the optimization results:the contact, stiffness and stress. Therefore, it improves the stress condition of the easily failed parts through calculating meshing parameters.
