Abstract

To explore the effect of wind conditions on the power output and installation direction of the Savonius wind turbine cluster, the power output of the proposed cluster under different installation directions at eight typical sites in China was obtained based on the variable speed control strategy and computational fluid dynamics simulation results. The optimal layout rules of the cluster under actual wind conditions were analyzed, and their universality was verified. The simulation results show that the output power can be increased to 1. 1 4 , 1.23, 1.31, 1.20, 1.21, 1.24, 1. 12 and 1. 11 times by properly installing cluster in Shenyang, Xiamen, Kunming, Hohhot, Qingdao, Kashgar, Dalian and Zhengzhou. For regions with an apparent single main wind energy direction, the cluster should be placed facing that direction. For regions with a significant phase difference between two main wind energy directions, the cluster should be arranged in the direction with more abundant wind energy resources. For regions with three main wind energy directions, no obvious main wind energy direction, or relatively uniform wind energy distribution, the cluster should be arranged in a direction avoiding the area where the wind turbines block each other, and then the direction with more abundant wind energy resources should be selected. This study maximizes the coupling gain of the Savonius wind turbine cluster under actual wind conditions and provides references for the selection of cluster installation directions under complex wind farm conditions.
