Abstract

To explore the relationship between thermal and mechanical properties with porosity of porous U-10Zr metal fuel, the representative volume elements of porous U-10Zr alloys with porosities of 5%,10%,15%,20%,25% and 30% were constructed by the finite element method. Then effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical properties of porous U-10Zr fuel were systematically revealed, including thermal conductivity, mechanical and thermal expansion properties. The simulation results show that the thermal conductivity, elastic modulus and compressive strength of U-10Zr metal fuel decrease with increasing porosity. When the porosity reaches 30%,the elastic modulus, yield strength and fracture strength of porous U-10Zr alloys are 7.78 GPA,303.95 MPa and 326. 55 MPa,respectively. The increase of porosity also reduces the thermal expansion performance, which is conducive to its thermal shock resistance. The thermal expansion coefficient of porous U-10Zr alloy with a porosity of 30% is 0.883×10-5 K-1.This work provides valuable guidance to the structure-property relationship, the internal mechanism,as well as the application potential of porous U-10Zr metal alloys in nuclear reactors.
