Abstract

Recently, studies on renewable energy have attracted significant attention because of severe pressure resulting from energy shortages and environmental problems such as greenhouse effects and air pollution. Compared with other renewable energies, solar power tower (SPT) technology can be combined with traditional power plants, and is one of the most promising methods for electricity generation. As a key component in solar-thermal conversion in the SPT system, the performance of the cavity receiver plays a critical role in determining the efficiency of the whole system. Both the current status of the cavity receiver and its future development are summarized in the following three aspects: the operational principles of the SPT system and the water/steam cavity receiver, the developments of the water/steam cavity receiver in the last 5 years, and the predicted difficulties in future development. The state-of-the-art nature of the cavity receiver is particularly highlighted in this paper.
