Abstract

High-efficiency, low-carbon (zero carbon) clean engine combustion is the key route for a power source to achieve carbon-peak and carbon neutrality goals, as well as the development goal of engine combustion technology. Traditional combustion regulation of engines is physical-based regulation and can only control limited macroscopical parameters like the combustion phase, while combustion directional regulation is chemical-based regulation and can achieve precise control in the microcosmic combustion process and reaction pathway. Based on the ideological theory of combustion directional regulation, ignition regulation through intervening active composition, flame speed regulation through hydrogen enrichment, and reaction pathway regulation through adding oxygenated fuel are proposed. The combustion directional regulation has been verified by engine operation in achieving high-efficiency, low-carbon clean combustion in natural gas-hydrogen and diesel engines. To support the development of an understanding of the mechanics of combustion directional regulation, a quantitative measurement method for key OH radicals in chain reactions of combustion has been developed. The combustion directional regulation may also apply to the development of direct-injection, zero-carbon engines.
