Abstract
With the advent of the information technology era, the development and popularization of Internet technology can promote technological progress and has become the key to the transformation of Chinese economic growth mode. On the basis of systematical analysis of the action mechanism of Internet development and urban innovation efficiency, combined with panel data of 277 prefecture-level cities in China from 2003 to 2017, this article empirically analyzess the effect of Internet development level on urban innovation efficiency in China. The results show that the Internet has a significant promotion effect on the improvement of urban innovation efficiency, and the promotion effect is mainly achieved by promoting innovation output rather than innovation input, and gradually strengthens with time. The urban physical environment and talent environment reversely regulate the Internet to promote the efficiency of urban innovation, that is, the higher the level of economic development and human capital of a city, the smaller the positive impact of the Internet on its innovation efficiency. While the regulating effect of urban financial environment is not significant. The influence of the Internet on innovation efficiency has significant regional heterogeneity, with the western region being the largest, followed by the central and eastern regions. However, innovation efficiency was not significantly improved in all regions until 2012. In order to better tap the innovation potential, China should strengthen the development of information technology at the same time, further improve the level of innovation environment in backward areas.
